168.01

John Deere 168.01 – PTA: Transmission Control Unit (AutoPowr/IVT), Supply Voltage (BAT) Too Low.

Issue description

The unswitched battery supply voltage to the transmission controller has dropped below the normal operating range (typically below 9 volts). This indicates a weak battery, a failing alternator, or a wiring/ground fault restricting power to the module. The control software functionality becomes limited or nonexistent. The tractor may shift to neutral, engage Park, or enter a "come-home" mode to prevent damage.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 7000 series
  • 8000 series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect battery health for adequate charge and overall health using a load tester (a weak battery is the most common cause).

  2. Check electrical connections at battery terminals, chassis ground, and the wiring harness connectors at the PTA module for cleanliness and tightness.

  3. Test the charging system to verify that the alternator is outputting the correct voltage.

  4. Inspect the specific fuse and power relay that supplies unswitched power to the transmission control unit.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and remove the key.

  2. Battery & Ground Maintenance

Clean the battery terminals and the main ground strap attached to the chassis.

  3. Voltage Test

Use a multimeter to check the battery voltage. If it is below 12V resting, charge or replace the battery.

  4. Harness Inspection

Trace the wiring harness leading to the Transmission Control Unit (PTA). Look for chafed wires, shorts, or loose pins in the connector.

  5. Attempt Recovery

Restart the engine. Reduce the electrical load (turn off cab lights, HVAC, etc.) and increase the engine RPM to see if the alternator can restore system voltage.

  6. Module Replacement

If the battery, alternator, and wiring all test perfectly but the code persists (meaning the module is internally failing to read the voltage), the PTA module itself will need to be replaced and recalibrated by a John Deere dealer.
