168.03

John Deere 168.03 – Armrest Interface Control Unit (AIC) or Cab Control Unit (CAB): Unswitched Supply Voltage High

Issue description

Unswitched battery voltage being supplied to the module has exceeded the safe operating threshold (typically registering over 16 to 18 volts). The control unit will automatically disable the affected functions (Function OFF) to prevent internal electrical damage and preserve system integrity.

Check the cause

  1. Test the charging system using a multimeter across the battery terminals while the engine is running to check for voltage spiking above 15-16 volts.

  2. Visually inspect the alternator and its voltage regulator for proper operation, signs of damage, or accumulated debris.

  3. Examine all related electrical connections, battery cables, and the unswitched power supply wiring harness leading to the AIC/Cab module for shorts to a higher voltage source or loose grounds.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure safety before performing electrical repairs.

  2. Address the Charging System

If the multimeter test confirmed the system is overcharging (producing >16V), replace the alternator or the alternator's internal voltage regulator.

  3. Clean Connections

Clean the battery terminals and ensure the alternator cables and ground straps are securely tightened.

  4. Module Replacement

If the alternator is outputting a normal 13.5V-14.4V but the AIC/Cab module still registers an active 000168.03 overvoltage fault, the module has likely suffered an internal hardware failure (such as a damaged internal voltage sensor) and must be replaced.

  5. Retest

Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and verify that the voltage has been restored to acceptable levels. Clear the diagnostic trouble codes and confirm that the armrest/cab functions are operational again.
