John Deere 168.03 – Front Chassis Module (PTF): Supply Voltage Too High
Issue description
Voltage To Module Over 16 Volts. Triggered when the unswitched battery voltage supplied to the module rises above 16 volts (typically for longer than 320 milliseconds). This indicates a severe overvoltage condition in the electrical charging system, which can damage sensitive electronic control units, sensors, and wiring.

Check the cause
Monitor System Voltage: Use a multimeter at the battery terminals with the engine running. If the voltage reads above 15.5V - 16.0V, the alternator's internal voltage regulator has failed and is overcharging the system.
Inspect the Battery: Check the battery for physical signs of overcharging, such as a bulging case, venting acid, or a "rotten egg" (hydrogen sulfide) smell. An overcharged battery may be permanently damaged and require replacement alongside the alternator.
Verify Electrical Connections: Inspect the wiring harness, ground straps, and connectors at the alternator and the PTF module. Look for loose connections or severe corrosion that could cause voltage spikes or erratic regulator behavior.

Safety First
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key.
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable first, followed by the positive (+) cable to prevent accidental shorts.
Remove the Drive Belt
Locate the belt tensioner, relieve the tension using the appropriate breaker bar or wrench, and slip the serpentine drive belt off the alternator pulley.
Disconnect the Alternator
Disconnect the main power cable (B+ terminal) and the electrical regulator harness connector from the rear of the alternator.
Unbolt the Alternator
Remove the mounting bolts securing the alternator to the engine bracket and carefully remove the heavy unit from the engine bay.
Install the New Alternator
Position the replacement alternator, insert and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.
Reassemble
Reconnect the electrical harness and the B+ power cable. Route the serpentine belt back over the pulleys and release the tensioner to secure the belt.
Test the System
Reconnect the battery terminals (positive first, then negative). Start the tractor and use a multimeter to verify that the charging voltage is now stable between 13.5V and 14.5V. Clear the 000168.03 fault code using a diagnostic tool or by cycling the tractor power.
