Issue description

This code is triggered when the control unit detects that the electrical supply voltage has dropped below 12.5 volts while the engine is operating at speeds exceeding 1500 RPM. This typically points to an underperforming charging system that cannot keep up with electrical demands under load.

Check the cause

  1. Reduce the engine RPM below 1500 to see if the voltage stabilizes and the active code changes to verify the high-RPM condition.

  2. Check the alternator drive belt for wear, proper tension, or slipping, which is a common cause of low voltage at higher RPMs.

  3. Inspect the battery terminals, alternator connections, and chassis grounds for loose, corroded, or damaged wiring that could cause voltage drops.

  4. Load test the battery to ensure it is holding a proper base charge and is not deteriorating under load.

  5. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the battery while the engine is running above 1500 RPM. If the voltage is below 12.5V, the alternator or voltage regulator is failing.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable before performing any electrical repairs.

  2. Address Wiring/Belt Issues

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a loose/worn alternator belt or corroded battery terminals, replace the belt or clean/tighten the connections first. Re-test the system.

  3. Replace the Battery (If Failed)

    If the battery failed the load test, remove the battery hold-downs, extract the old battery, and install a new OEM-spec battery. Clean the terminal clamps thoroughly before attaching them to the new battery.

  4. Replace the Alternator (If Failed)

    Disconnect the electrical harness and heavy-gauge charge wire from the rear of the alternator. Release the tension on the drive belt and slip the belt off the alternator pulley. Remove the alternator mounting bolts and extract the faulty alternator. Install the new alternator, torque the mounting bolts to spec, and reinstall the drive belt (ensure proper tension). Reconnect the electrical connections securely.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine, run it above 1500 RPM, and verify with a multimeter that the system is charging at approximately 13.5V to 14.2V. Reset the ECU/BCU using a diagnostic tool (like Service ADVISOR) to clear the fault code and restore normal operation.
