168.18

John Deere 168.18 – FCC (Front Console Computer): Instrument Unit, Supply Voltage (BAT) Too Low

Issue description

The control unit has detected that the supply voltage has fallen below the acceptable limit of 9 volts. This undervoltage condition can lead to limited or no functionality in the control software, erratic operations, and inaccurate instrument readings.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110M
  • 6120M
  • 6130M
  • 6145M
  • 6155M
  • 6175M
  • 6195M
  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R

Check the cause

  1. Check if the battery is deeply discharged and perform a load test to ensure it can hold a charge

  2. Inspect the battery terminals, chassis grounds, and the wiring harness leading to the FCC for loose, corroded, or damaged connections that could cause a voltage drop

  3. Verify that the alternator is providing adequate voltage output (typically 13.5V - 14.5V) while the engine is running, even at low RPMs

  4. Look for blown fuses or damaged wiring in the circuit specifically supplying the Dash Module

  5. Identify any unnecessary electrical drains drawing power when the machine is off

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Clean/Repair Connections

Clean any corrosion from the battery posts and cable terminals. Reconnect and tighten securely.

  3. Replace Battery/Alternator (If Faulty)

If the battery failed the load test or the alternator failed the output test during diagnostics, replace the faulty component.

  4. Repair Harness

If a voltage drop is found between the battery and the FCC connector, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the blown fuse.

  5. Replace the Dash Module (FCC)

If the battery, alternator, and wiring all test perfectly (showing >12V at the module connector), but the FCC still logs an internal undervoltage fault and fails to operate, the Dash Module itself has an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Instrument Cluster / Dash Module (FCC)

    AL215830

Fits John Deere 6110R, 6130R, 6145R, 6155R. Dash modules often require dealer programming/flashing to match the tractor's hours and VIN.

  • Instrument Cluster / Dash Module (FCC)

    AL215829

Fits John Deere 6110R, 6130R, 6145R, 6155R. Dash modules often require dealer programming/flashing to match the tractor's hours and VIN.

  • 12V Heavy-Duty Battery

Varies by specific tractor model and CCA requirements (Generic part).

  • Alternator

Varies by specific tractor model (Generic part).
