1713.15

John Deere 1713.15 – EPC, UIC, or BCU: Hydraulic Oil Filter Dirty

Issue description

The filter alarm level 1 switch at the hydraulic oil filter remains closed for more than three seconds when the hydraulic/transmission oil temperature is above 28°C (82°F) and the engine speed is above 700 rpm, indicating the filter is restricted.

Check the cause

  1. Verify operating conditions: Ensure the code triggers under normal operating temperatures (above 28°C/82°F), as cold, thick oil can cause false pressure spikes.

  2. Inspect the filter housing and associated lines for physical damage, crimps, or blockages.

  3. Check the differential pressure switch and wiring to ensure it is not shorted to ground, which would falsely signal a closed switch.

  4. Inspect for severe contamination: When removing the old filter, check for heavy metal shavings or debris that could indicate a failing hydraulic pump or internal transmission component.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower all implements, and turn off the engine.

  2. Change the Hydraulic Oil Filter

Locate the hydraulic oil filter bowl. Remove the housing, extract the dirty filter element, and clean the inside of the filter housing.

  3. Install the New Filter

Insert the new OEM filter element and reinstall the housing with new O-rings (lubricated with clean hydraulic oil).

  4. Check Fluid Levels

Verify the hydraulic/transmission oil level and top off with John Deere HY-GARD (or BIO-HY-GARD II) if necessary.

  5. Monitor and Test

Start the engine and allow the hydraulic oil to warm up above 28°C (82°F). Run the engine above 700 rpm.

  6. Clear Codes

Reset the system/clear the fault codes and operate the hydraulic functions to ensure normal oil pressure and temperature are maintained and the code does not return.
