John Deere 174.16 – ECU: Fuel Temperature High (Moderately Severe Level)

Engine fuel temperature rises above the normal operating range. Because hot fuel loses its lubrication properties, running the engine with excessively hot fuel can severely damage the fuel injector pump. To protect the engine, the system will automatically enter a derate mode—limiting maximum engine power and disabling any power boost features. An initial audible alarm may also sound.

   Check engine coolant level, as low coolant can contribute to overall engine and fuel overheating

   Inspect the entire cooling system (radiator, air-to-air aftercooler, and fuel cooler) for dirt, chaff, or debris blockages

   Inspect coolant and fuel lines for pinched or restricted hoses

   Check for other active sensor fault codes (e.g., 174.03 for voltage too high, or 174.04 for voltage too low) to rule out a failing sensor

   Reduce Load

   Immediately reduce engine speed and load to allow the engine and fuel to cool down.

   Clean the Cooling System

   Turn off the machine and thoroughly blow out or wash the radiator and fuel cooler fins to restore proper airflow.

   Top Off Fluids

   Add engine coolant if the reservoir is low.

   Add Fuel / Switch Tanks

   Add fresh (cooler) fuel to the tank or switch fuel tanks to immediately lower the overall fuel temperature.

   Test

   Restart the machine and operate under normal load. If the 000174.16 code returns after the cooling system has been cleaned and fluids topped off, the Fuel Temperature Sensor is likely faulty and providing a false high reading, or the Fuel Cooler is internally restricted/failing and must be replaced.
