John Deere 177.16 – EPC, PTP, TCU, BIF, or SDM: Transmission Oil Temperature High

The control unit has detected that the transmission oil temperature is operating between 101°C (214°F) and 105°C (221°F). Prolonged exposure to these temperatures can lead to severe overheating, fluid degradation, and potential damage to the transmission system.

   Check the transmission/hydraulic oil level, as low oil volume is a primary cause of overheating.

   Inspect the transmission oil cooler for plugged fins, accumulated debris, or mud that could restrict airflow.

   Inspect oil cooler lines for pinched, crushed, or restricted hoses.

   Check for transmission oil filter restrictions, which can cause fluid bypass and overheating.

   Evaluate operating conditions to determine if the machine is under an unusually heavy hydraulic load or operating in extreme ambient temperatures without adequate cool-down periods.

   If the oil is not physically overheating but the code persists, test the Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor (Sensor B60) and its wiring harness (lead 6002) for open circuits, shorts to ground, or voltage anomalies.

   Cool Down

   Immediately stop the tractor/machine, reduce the engine load, and allow the transmission oil to cool down.

   Clean the Cooler

   Thoroughly clean the exterior of the transmission oil cooler and radiator assembly with compressed air or water to restore proper airflow.

   Correct Fluid Levels

   Top off the transmission/hydraulic fluid to the correct level on the dipstick/sight glass.

   Replace Filters

   If the transmission oil filters are old or a restriction is suspected, drain the fluid and replace the transmission oil filters.

   Repair Lines

   Reroute or replace any pinched or damaged hydraulic lines leading to the oil cooler.

   Replace the Sensor

   If diagnostics prove the B60 temperature sensor is providing false high readings, locate the sensor on the transmission housing, disconnect the wiring harness, unthread the old sensor, and install a replacement.

   Clear Codes

   Cycle the key switch or use a diagnostic tool to clear the stored 000177.16 fault code and test-operate the machine to ensure the code does not return.
