John Deere 177.19 – CCU, RPT, or PTA: Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor Fault

The control software has detected an open circuit to the transmission oil temperature sensor, or a CAN BUS message cannot be received. When this error is detected, the control software transmits a replacement value, but equipment functionality may be significantly limited or entirely non-functional to protect the transmission.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission oil temperature sensor for any signs of an open circuit, chafing, or breaks.

   Ensure all connections to the sensor are secure. Look for bent pins, moisture, or corrosion inside the connector.

   Use a multimeter or diagnostic tool to test the transmission oil temperature sensor and the associated circuit for continuity and proper resistance values.

   Ensure that both the PTA and CCU control software are updated to the latest versions, as patches may address sensor circuit logic issues.

   Park and prepare machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, lower all equipment to the ground, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the battery ground cable (-) before making adjustments to the electrical system.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission housing.

   Inspect and clean connections

   Disconnect the sensor's 2-pin wiring harness. Clean any corroded connectors and reconnect any loose wires.

   Repair wiring

   If the wiring is damaged, repair or replace the affected wires or connectors.

   Remove faulty sensor

   If the circuit tests fine but the sensor fails continuity/resistance testing, remove the faulty sensor. Have a catch pan ready as a small amount of transmission fluid may leak.

   Install new sensor

   Install the new transmission oil temperature sensor (ensure the O-ring is in place if required) and tighten to specification.

   Reconnect components

   Reconnect the 2-pin wiring harness and the battery ground cable.

   Clear codes

   Clear the diagnostic trouble codes using a diagnostic tool.

    Test operation

    Operate the machine and monitor the system performance to ensure the fault does not recur.
