John Deere 1807.1 – Steering System Control Unit (SSU or XSC): Steering Wheel Position Sensor 1 Circuit Current Problem / Steering Wheel Position Sensor 1 Signal Mismatch

Issue description

Triggered when the values read by the steering wheel position sensors (SID 1 and SID 2) differ by a margin of more than 20. This discrepancy indicates that the sensors are no longer in the correct ratio, pointing specifically to a signal mismatch, calibration error, or electrical failure in Channel 1 (SID 1). When this occurs, the steering system may not function correctly, potentially disabling AutoTrac/AutoSteer and compromising vehicle control.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Sensor Calibration: Ensure that both steering wheel position sensors (SID 1 and SID 2) are correctly calibrated via the diagnostic monitor.

  2. Inspect Sensor Alignment: Check the physical alignment and mounting of the steering wheel position sensor (often designated as component B138).

  3. Verify Wiring and Connections: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors related to the steering wheel position sensor for signs of damage, loose pins, or corrosion. Ensure the power supply to the sensor is stable and not dropping below 4 mA.

  4. Monitor Sensor Output: Use a diagnostic tool to monitor the live sensor output. Compare the sensor readings with actual steering movements to identify the exact point of discrepancy.

  5. Check for Software Updates: Ensure that the SSU/XSC control software is up-to-date, as firmware updates are sometimes released to address signal processing bugs.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground to ensure safety while working on the electrical steering system.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Locate the Steering Wheel Position Sensor (B138), typically mounted on or near the steering column/steering valve assembly.

  3. Inspect and Clean

    Disconnect the sensor harness. Clean the connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and check for continuity between the sensor connector and the SSU/XSC module.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring is intact but the signal mismatch persists (or if the sensor is physically damaged), remove the mounting hardware and extract the faulty sensor. Install the new genuine OEM sensor and secure the mounting hardware.

  5. Recalibrate

    Reconnect the battery. You must perform a steering system calibration using the in-cab display or Service ADVISOR tool so the SSU/XSC learns the new sensor's end-stops and center position.

  6. Test

    Clear the 001807.10 fault code and test drive the machine, verifying that AutoTrac engages and steering responds accurately without throwing the code again.
