186.15

John Deere 186.15 – PTF: Front PTO Speed Sensor, Speed Too High

Issue description

The control software detects that the front Power Take-Off (PTO) is operating at a speed exceeding the specified safe or operational range. When this code is active, the system's reaction is to limit the functionality of the front PTO or disable it entirely to prevent mechanical damage.

Applies to these machines

  • 8245R–8400R

Check the cause

  1. Inspect actual PTO speed to verify whether the front PTO is genuinely operating outside of its specified speed range (to determine if the issue is mechanical or a sensor fault)

  2. Ensure that the front PTO speed sensor (B58) is properly calibrated

  3. Check the PTF control software settings to ensure they match the operational requirements of the attached implement

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the B58 Front PTO Speed Sensor for corrosion, shorts, or loose connections that could cause erratic high-speed signal spikes

Repair steps

  1. Adjust Speed

If the diagnostic checks reveal the PTO is actually spinning too fast, adjust or reduce the speed mechanically or via the operator controls.

  2. Recalibrate

If the speed is normal but the reading is high, use a John Deere diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR) to recalibrate the B58 Front PTO speed sensor.

  3. Update Software

Update or adjust the PTF control software to the latest version to patch any known speed regulation bugs.

  4. Replace Sensor

If the sensor fails the operational check or continues to send erroneous high-speed signals after calibration and wiring checks, replace the Front PTO Speed Sensor.
