John Deere 1865.09 – CLC / SSU: ELX Message Missing

Issue description

The control module is no longer receiving the expected communication messages from the ELX circuit over the CAN bus. This is typically caused by a blown ELX fuse, a failing ELX relay, a short/open in the CAN bus wiring, or a sudden drop in system voltage causing the module to drop offline.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the tractor (resets communication messages and can clear the code if caused by a transient voltage drop)

  2. Check system voltage at the battery and alternator (if voltage drops below 11.2V for more than 2 seconds, modules can drop off the CAN bus)

  3. Inspect the ELX relay in the main fuse/relay load center (with the tractor running, the relay should feel warm to the touch; if cold, it is likely not engaging)

  4. Inspect the ELX power fuses (often labeled F18, F20, F21, or F08 depending on the model)

  5. Inspect the wiring harness for rubbing or melting (especially on 7000 series, check for harness rubbing against linkages or melting near the exhaust)

Repair steps

  1. Power down system

    Turn off the key switch and disconnect the battery ground to ensure safety while working on the electrical load center.

  2. Access load center

    Remove the cover to the main fuse and relay load center (typically located on the right-hand console or behind the seat).

  3. Replace ELX fuse

    Locate the specific ELX fuse for your model. If it is blown, replace it with a fuse of the exact same amperage (usually a 10 Amp red fuse). Do not use a higher-rated fuse, as this can damage the SSU or CLC modules.

  4. Swap or replace ELX relay

    Locate the ELX Relay (often designated as K23 or K24). Remove it and swap it with a known-good identical relay from a non-critical accessory circuit (like a work lamp relay) to test. If functionality returns, replace the relay permanently.

  5. Clean connections

    Use electrical contact cleaner on the relay and fuse sockets to ensure there is no high resistance caused by corrosion or dirt.

  6. Trace and repair wiring

    If the new fuse blows immediately upon turning the key, you have a dead short. Trace the power supply wire (often a red wire, circuit 502 or 072) from the load center to the CLC/SSU, repairing any chafed or melted sections.

  7. Test and clear codes

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and verify that code 001865.09 has moved from 'Active' to 'Stored'. Clear the stored codes.
