1871.31

John Deere 1871.31 – BLC: CAN BUS Message Cannot Be Received, Information from Implement.

Issue description

This indicates a communication failure on the implement CAN bus network where the tractor's control system is expecting data from an attached implement, but the message is missing or cannot be received.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110M
  • 6120M
  • 6130M
  • 6145M
  • 6155M
  • 6175M
  • 6195M
  • 6090MC
  • 6090RC
  • 6100MC
  • 6100RC
  • 6110MC
  • 6110RC

Check the cause

  1. Check CANBUS State and Error Counts in the Diagnostics Center for Passive Error Counts, BUS Warn Counts, BUS Off Counts, or Overrun Error Counts to identify high utilization or physical wiring issues.

  2. Verify CAN Bus Wiring integrity for the four implement CAN bus wires: Red (Power 12 V), Black (Ground 0 V), Yellow (CAN High 2.5 V), and Green (CAN Low 2.5 V).

  3. Test Termination Resistors with the battery disconnected by measuring resistance between pins C and D of the diagnostic connector (60 ohms is correct, 120 ohms indicates one missing/damaged resistor, OL indicates both missing/damaged).

  4. Visually inspect the implement CAN bus connector at the rear of the tractor for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  5. Perform a cold boot of the system if no wiring problems are found to see if communication resets.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery before performing any electrical repairs.

  2. Clean/Repair Connectors

If moisture or corrosion was found during the diagnostic checks, thoroughly clean the implement connector and apply dielectric grease. Ensure proper connector sealing.

  3. Repair Harness

If the Yellow (CAN High) or Green (CAN Low) wires are shorted or broken, repair the harness using OEM-approved splicing methods and ensure the harness is protected from future chafing.

  4. Replace Termination Resistors

If the ohmmeter test yielded 120 ohms or OL, locate and replace the faulty CAN bus termination resistor(s) on the implement network.

  5. Test the System

Reconnect the battery, connect the implement, and perform a cold boot. Verify that the BLC 001871.31 code changes from "Active" to "Stored" and clear the codes.

  6. Replace BLC

If the wiring, resistors, and implement are all verified to be in perfect working order and the code persists, the BLC (Main Control Module) itself may have an internal fault and require replacement and reprogramming by a dealer.
