John Deere 1873.03 – Hitch Control Unit (HCU) / Hitch Control Controller (HCC): Rear Hitch Position Sensor Circuit Voltage High

Issue description

The voltage signal coming from the rear hitch position sensor is out of range high (above 4.75 volts). When this code is active, the electronic hitch control function is degraded, and the hitch may fail to raise/lower or display height numbers on the monitor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the rear hitch position sensor for physical damage, loose pins, or corrosion. A broken ground wire will often cause the sensor signal to default to a high voltage (5V).

  2. Test the sensor output voltage using a multimeter. If it is stuck above 4.75V regardless of the hitch's physical position, the sensor has likely failed internally.

  3. Check shared circuits by unplugging the rear hitch draft sensor (often located behind the right-hand lift cylinder). If the position sensor voltage returns to normal and the hitch starts working, the draft sensor is shorted and pulling the circuit down.

Repair steps

  1. Power down

    Power down the tractor and turn the key to the OFF position.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the rear hitch position sensor (typically mounted on or near the rockshaft / rear lift arm assembly).

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor.

  4. Remove sensor

    Remove the mounting hardware and extract the faulty sensor.

  5. Install new sensor

    Install the new position sensor and secure the mounting hardware.

  6. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Calibrate hitch

    Perform a Hitch Calibration procedure using the tractor's CommandCenter display or a diagnostic tool so the HCU can learn the new sensor's minimum and maximum travel limits.
