John Deere 1873.04 – HCC / HCU / BCU: Rear Hitch Position Sensor Circuit Voltage Low
Issue description
Triggered when the control unit detects an abnormally low voltage (below 0.25 volts) at the input of the rear hitch position sensor. This indicates a potential issue in the sensor circuit, such as a poor connection, a broken wire, or an internal fault within the sensor itself, which impairs the accurate monitoring and control of the rear hitch. Hitch control functions are typically degraded or disabled.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the rear hitch position sensor for physical damage, broken wires, loose connections, or corrosion.
Test the sensor's output voltage using a multimeter while the system is powered to ensure it is not dropping below the 0.25V threshold.
Verify that the Hitch Control Module (HCC/HCU) is supplying the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) to the sensor.
Repair steps
Repair Wiring
If any damaged wiring or corroded pins were found during the diagnostic checks, repair or replace the affected harness sections.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact and the reference voltage is correct but the sensor output remains below 0.25V, the sensor is internally defective and must be replaced.
Recalibrate the Hitch
After replacing the rear hitch position sensor or repairing the circuit, you must perform a proper calibration of the rear hitch system. The control unit will not recognize the new sensor's sweep parameters until the calibration procedure is completed via the tractor's CommandCenter or diagnostic service tool.
Clear Codes
Restart the tractor and clear the stored codes from the module memory to verify the repair.
