John Deere 1873.11 – HCC / HCU: Rear Hitch Position Sensor Voltage Out Of Range
Issue description
The control module detects that the voltage signal from the rear hitch position sensor is outside of its expected operating parameters, or when the system attempts a hitch calibration but fails because it cannot detect a sufficient difference between the lower and upper physical limits of the hitch's movement.

Check the cause
Check for physical restrictions in the rear hitch mechanism, such as bound linkages, packed debris, or mechanical damage that prevents full range of motion.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the rear hitch position sensor for physical damage, loose pins, moisture, or corrosion.
Measure the sensor's output voltage to ensure it is within the specified range (typically between 0.25V and 4.75V).
Repair steps
Clear Restrictions
Resolve any physical binding or blockages in the rear hitch assembly.
Repair Wiring
If the visual inspection reveals damaged wires or corroded connectors, repair or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact but the sensor voltage remains out of range or the sensor is unresponsive to hitch movement, remove and replace the Rear Hitch Position Sensor.
Perform Hitch Calibration
Perform a Rear Hitch Calibration procedure via the tractor's CommandCenter/monitor after replacing the sensor or clearing a mechanical restriction. The system will not operate correctly until the HCC/HCU learns the new upper and lower limits.
Clear Codes
Restart the tractor to verify the active diagnostic trouble code has cleared and test the hitch's manual and automatic operation.
