John Deere 1881.03 – HCC or HCU: Rear Hitch Draft Sensor Circuit Voltage High

Issue description

Triggered when the Rear Hitch Draft Sensor voltage exceeds the normal operating range (above 5.35 volts). This indicates a sensor malfunction, a wiring issue such as a short-to-power or open ground, or an internal problem within the control unit. Hitch control functions are usually degraded and may revert to manual switch control.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the Rear Hitch Draft Sensor for physical damage, loose pins, or corrosion.

  2. Measure the sensor's output voltage with a multimeter to verify if it is actually outputting above 5.35 volts.

  3. Test the sensor signal circuit for a short-to-power. Verify that the sensor is receiving proper 5V reference supply and has a clean ground connection.

  4. Restart the tractor to verify if the active Service Code reappears, as sometimes communication messages can be corrected by a simple restart.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Locate the Rear Hitch Draft Sensor (typically located at the lower draft link pins on the rear hitch assembly).

  3. Replace Faulty Components

    If the wiring is damaged, repair the harness. If the wiring tests good but the voltage remains out of range, remove the retaining hardware and replace the Draft Pin Sensor.

  4. Lubricate

    If installing a new sensor, lubricate the draft sensor area using John Deere SD Polyurea grease (or equivalent) as specified in the service manual.

  5. Calibrate the Hitch

    After replacing the sensor or repairing the circuit, you must perform a proper calibration of the Rear Hitch Draft Sensor / HCU according to the manufacturer's instructions (often requires John Deere Service ADVISOR software or a specific sequence on the CommandCenter display).
