John Deere 1881.19 – HCC, TSC, SFA, or BCU: Incorrect CAN BUS Message, Draft Sensor
Issue description
Control software is receiving a message over the CAN BUS stating that the rear hitch draft sensor is either unavailable (due to an incorrect sensor configuration) or is sending a faulty signal. This code is generated when the rear hitch draft sensor circuit experiences a problem, most commonly when the sensor voltage drops below 0.20 V, indicating an open circuit, a short to ground, or a failed sensor.

Check the cause
Verify the draft sensor configuration in the HCC/BCU using a diagnostic tool to ensure the system hasn't lost its configuration settings.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the rear hitch draft sensor for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
Back-probe the sensor connector and measure the voltage. A reading below 0.20 V confirms a circuit issue (short to ground, broken wire, or dead internal sensor potentiometer).
If the sensor voltage is normal (typically between 0.5V and 4.5V), check the CAN BUS communication lines between the HCC/BCU and the module logging the fault (e.g., SFA or TSC) for continuity.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the rear hitch draft position sensor, which is typically mounted near the lower link pins or the draft sensing linkage at the rear hitch assembly.
Disconnect Wiring
Carefully unplug the electrical harness connector from the draft sensor.
Remove Hardware
Remove the retaining hardware. Depending on the model, this may involve removing a split bushing, round retainer, or lower link pin fasteners.
Extract and Replace
Pull the faulty draft sensor out of its housing. Lubricate the seals on the new sensor (if applicable) and install it into the linkage.
Reassemble
Secure the sensor with the retaining hardware and plug the electrical connector back in.
Calibrate
Reconnect the battery and power on the tractor. Use a John Deere service tool or the tractor's interactive command center to clear the stored 001881.19 fault codes. You must perform a hitch/draft sensor calibration procedure so the control unit learns the new sensor's base voltage limits.
