1883.01

John Deere 1883.01 – CCU or RPT: Rear PTO Underspeed

Issue description

The rear PTO speed sensor detects that the rear PTO shaft is turning too slowly compared to the expected RPMs. This can be caused by a low engine speed paired with a heavy implement, a low rear PTO calibration value, an incorrect PTO shaft being installed, a mismatch between the PTO shaft and the speed lever, or a faulty PTO speed sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the physical PTO shaft installed matches the selected PTO speed lever setting (e.g., 540 vs. 1000 RPM).

  2. Ensure the engine speed is high enough to handle the implement load.

  3. Ensure the CommandCenter has the rear PTO engagement set appropriately.

  4. Check the PTO speed sensor connector and wiring harness (located near the rear PTO shield) for damage, corrosion, or disconnection.

  5. Ensure there is proper clearance between the PTO speed sensor and the tone ring/clutch fins inside the housing.

Repair steps

  1. Adjust Operation

Adjust the engine throttle to a higher speed and restart the tractor. Select the proper PTO engagement rate in the cab.

  2. Cycle Power

Cycle the key switch or follow the solution on the CommandCenter page, then cycle tractor power to clear the code.

  3. Sensor Replacement

If the code returns immediately upon engagement and the RPMs read erratically or not at all, disconnect the battery, locate the sensor above the rear PTO shield, unclip the wiring harness, unthread the old sensor, and install the new PTO speed sensor.

  4. Recalibration

If the sensor is functioning but the code persists, have a John Deere dealer perform a Rear PTO Calibration via their Service ADVISOR diagnostic software.
