John Deere 1883.31 – RPT or BCU: Rear PTO Speed Too High

This code is triggered when the control software detects that the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) speed is excessively high, or when the engine speed and selected PTO speed indicate the PTO speed should not be high, but the sensor is erroneously reading a high speed.

   Inspect the Rear PTO Speed Sensor (Component B06 or B16) for any visible damage, disconnections, or heavy debris buildup. Ensure the sensor is securely mounted to the PTO housing.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors (such as plug X94F on 6000 series tractors) related to the rear PTO speed sensor for signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Test the continuity of the sensor circuit (e.g., Circuits 050 and 576 on 7000 series).

   Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic mode (e.g., CCU/BCU Diagnostic Mode, Address BCU021 or Address 4) to monitor the sensor's output. Perform the 'B06 - Rear PTO Speed Sensor, Operational Check' to see if the sensor is transmitting accurate pulses per revolution to the control software.

   Perform an operational check of the rear PTO to ensure it is functioning correctly and within the specified speed range. If the actual speed is normal but the code persists, the sensor is likely at fault.

   Safety First

   Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the machine to cool. Relieve any hydraulic pressure before working near hydraulic or transmission lines.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the Rear PTO Speed Sensor (B06/B16), which is typically mounted directly on the rear PTO housing.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Carefully unplug the wiring harness connector (e.g., X94F) from the sensor.

   Remove the Sensor

   Unbolt and remove the faulty speed sensor from the PTO housing.

   Install the New Sensor

   Insert the new sensor into the housing. Torque the mounting bolt to OEM specifications (e.g., 13 N·m or 10 lb.-ft. on 6J series tractors).

   Reconnect and Test

   Reconnect the wiring harness plug. Start the tractor, clear the stored fault codes from the BCU/RPT, and engage the PTO to verify the repair and ensure the code does not return.
