John Deere 190.09 – PTF (Front Chassis Module): CAN Bus Message Missing From Engine Control Unit - Engine Speed / Engine Speed Abnormal Update Rate

Issue description

The engine speed data is either missing entirely or has an abnormal update rate over the CAN network. This is a communication error indicating that the module expecting the engine speed data is not receiving it from the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

Applies to these machines

  • 6110M
  • 6120M
  • 6130M
  • 6145M
  • 6155M
  • 6175M
  • 6195M
  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 6090MC
  • 6100MC
  • 6110MC
  • 6090RC
  • 6100RC
  • 6110RC

Check the cause

  1. Inspect CAN network wiring between the ECU and the PTF for physical damage, chafing, or loose connections.

  2. Check connectors on the CAN bus to ensure they are properly seated and free from moisture or corrosion.

  3. Verify data integrity and update rate over the CAN network using a diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR).

  4. Test the engine speed sensor to verify it is functioning correctly and transmitting data to the ECU.

  5. Check for accompanying codes that might indicate a broader network failure or internal ECU faults.

Repair steps

  1. Clean and Secure Connections

Disconnect the harnesses at the ECU and the PTF. Clean the pins with contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect them. Many CAN bus missing message errors are resolved by fixing poor pin tension or dirty contacts.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal high resistance or a break in the CAN bus lines between the ECU and PTF, repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness.

  3. Replace the Sensor

If the ECU is not broadcasting the engine speed because it isn't reading it, replace the Engine Speed Sensor (which threads into the engine cylinder head or timing gear case).

  4. Update Software

Ensure the ECU and PTF control software/firmware are updated to the latest versions, as software glitches can cause abnormal update rates.

  5. Clear and Retest

Clear the diagnostic trouble codes and run the tractor to verify that the PTF is successfully receiving the engine speed message and no warning lights return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Engine Speed Sensor (PTO & Engine Speed Sensor)

    RE537634

Fits most 6M and 6R series tractors, e.g., 6155M, 6175M, 6110R. Threads into the engine cylinder head and/or the engine timing gear case to measure camshaft and crankshaft speed.

  • Engine Speed Sensor (Alternative)

    RE519144

Fits various other JD engine applications.

  • CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Connectors

Specific part numbers vary heavily based on the exact tractor chassis and cab configuration. Must be sourced via the dealer using the machine's specific PIN/Serial Number.
