Issue description

Check the cause
Verify Operating Conditions: Check if simply increasing the engine RPM resolves the code, as it frequently appears during diagnostic modes or calibration routines if the operator leaves the tractor at low idle.
Check for Engine ECU Codes: Look for active Engine ECU codes (e.g., fuel pressure faults or engine speed sensor faults) that might be causing the engine to physically bog down or broadcast an erratic RPM signal.
Verify CAN Bus Integrity: Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the SFA module. Look for corrosion, loose pins, or chafed wires.
Check Power Supply: Verify the battery and ignition supplies to the SFA module. Inspect the relevant fuses (e.g., F30 for the SFA control unit on some models).
Repair steps
Throttle Up
If the code was triggered during a calibration routine or critical operation, increase the engine speed to the specified high-idle or calibration RPM, and repeat the routine. Cycle the ignition key off and back on to see if the code clears.
Inspect and Clean Connections
If the code persists during normal operation, disconnect the wiring harness at the SFA module and the Engine ECU. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.
Test the CAN Bus
Using a multimeter, check the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the SFA connector. You should see approximately 2.5V on both lines when active, and 60 ohms of resistance across the terminating resistors when the battery is disconnected.
Address Engine Performance
If the engine is genuinely failing to maintain RPM under load, diagnose the mechanical engine side (e.g., replace a failing fuel rail pressure sensor or clogged fuel filters).
Software Update
Have a John Deere dealer verify that the SFA and Engine ECU software are up to date, as calibration thresholds are occasionally patched in newer software versions.
Module Replacement
If the CAN bus wiring is perfect, the engine runs at the correct speed, and the SFA module still fails to process the CAN messages, the SFA module itself may have an internal fault and require replacement.
