John Deere 190.18 – PTR, PTP, or PTQ: Main Control Module Has Noted The Engine Speed Has Not Been Received On The CAN BUS From The Engine Module.

Issue description

Triggered when the transmission control unit detects that the engine speed signal has dropped below a critical threshold (typically below 300–400 RPM for more than 2 to 3 seconds) during a shift or standard operation. This usually means the engine has stalled, the engine speed sensor has failed, or there is a communication loss on the CAN BUS between the engine and transmission modules.

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the engine actually stalled due to severe overload or operator error (if the tractor simply stalled, the code is a normal reaction)

  2. Inspect the engine speed sensor (crankshaft position sensor) for physical damage, heavy dirt/debris accumulation, or misalignment

  3. Check the wiring harness and CAN BUS connections between the Engine Speed Sensor, the Engine Control Unit (ECU), and the PTR module for loose pins, corrosion, or chafed wires

  4. Test the engine speed sensor circuitry using a multimeter for proper resistance and ensure there are no open or short circuits in the signal wires

  5. Check the Engine ECU for accompanying codes (ECU sensor faults indicate a localized sensor issue, while multiple CAN BUS codes suggest a wiring harness failure)

Repair steps

  1. Cycle Power

    Turn the key switch off, wait a few moments, and restart the tractor. If the code was caused by an engine stall, returning the shift lever to Park/Neutral and restarting will often clear the code.

  2. Clean and Reconnect

    If the code persists, disconnect the engine speed sensor. Clean the connector with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and reconnect.

  3. Replace the Sensor

    If multimeter testing shows the sensor is out of specification (or if the signal drops out intermittently during operation), remove the retaining bolt, pull the old engine speed sensor from the block, and install a new OEM sensor.

  4. Repair the Harness

    If the sensor is functioning but the PTR module still isn't receiving the CAN BUS signal, trace the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the Engine ECU to the PTR module. Splice and heat-shrink any broken wires or replace the damaged harness section.

  5. Software Update

    In rare cases, dealer-level software updates for the PTR and Engine ECU may be required to resolve communication timing issues.

  6. Test Drive

    Clear the codes and operate the tractor through all gears to ensure the engine speed signal remains stable above 400 RPM during shifts.
