John Deere 190.19 – CCU, EPC, TCU, CSC, PRC, PTA: Incorrect CAN BUS Message, Engine Speed from ECU

The module logging the code is expecting to receive the engine's RPM/speed data over the CAN BUS network from the Engine Control Unit (ECU), but the message is missing, invalid, or the ECU is unable to determine the engine speed.

   Check for engine stalling — if the engine stalled while the key was on, the ECU stops sending speed data, triggering this code in the CCU/EPC.

   Check for priority ECU codes — read all system codes. If the ECU cannot read the engine speed, it will log its own priority fault code (e.g., A00 190.xx or 110.xx). Diagnose the ECU code first.

   Test the Engine Speed Sensor (Magnetic Pickup) — disconnect the harness and measure resistance at the sensor terminals (should be 810 ± 240 ohms). Then, measure AC voltage while cranking/running; it should increase as engine speed increases.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the engine speed sensor and the ECU for shorts, opens, or corrosion.

   Check CAN BUS integrity — inspect the CAN BUS communication lines between the ECU and the CCU for damaged wires or loose connector pins.

   Verify the condition

   Turn the key on and start the engine. If the engine stalled previously, clear the codes and see if 190.19 returns.

   Repair sensor wiring

   If the sensor wiring harness is chafed, melted, or disconnected, repair or replace the damaged wiring and secure it away from hot engine components.

   Replace the engine speed sensor

   If the magnetic pickup sensor fails the resistance test (open circuit or out of spec) or fails to generate an AC voltage signal during cranking, remove the mounting bolt, pull the old sensor from the engine block/flywheel housing, and install a new sensor.

   Repair CAN BUS lines

   If the sensor is good and the ECU is reading engine speed but the CCU is still logging 190.19, trace the CAN BUS wiring from the ECU to the CCU. Repair any broken communication wires.

   Clear and test

   Clear all diagnostic trouble codes from the CCU and ECU. Run the machine through its operating RPM range to verify the repair.
