John Deere 190.19 – EPC / TCU / CSC / PTA / PRC: Incorrect CAN BUS Message, Engine Speed from ECU / CAN Communication Error Invalid Engine Speed.

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is generated when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) cannot determine the engine speed and therefore cannot provide valid data over the CAN BUS network. Because the transmission controller requires engine speed data to operate safely, the ECU transmits a replacement/invalid value over the CAN BUS. To prevent stalling or erratic shifting, the transmission controller defaults the transmission to neutral. Note: This code is frequently triggered simply because the engine stalled.

   Verify if the engine simply stalled during operation, which causes a temporary loss of engine speed data

   Scan the Engine Control Unit (ECU) for active primary faults related to the Engine Speed Sensor

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine Speed Sensor and the ECU for damage, corrosion, or loose pins

   Check the CAN BUS communication lines between the ECU and the transmission controller for continuity and proper voltage

   Clear and Retest

   If the code was caused by an operator-induced engine stall, clear the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from all modules and restart the engine. If the code does not return, no further repair is needed.

   Diagnose Sensor

   If the code persists and the ECU is logging a primary engine speed fault, locate the Engine Speed Sensor (magnetic pickup/crankshaft position sensor) on the engine block.

   Test Harness

   Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to test the wiring harness for shorts to ground or open circuits back to the ECU.

   Replace Sensor

   If the wiring is intact, remove the faulty Engine Speed Sensor and install a replacement.

   Recalibrate/Clear

   Reconnect the wiring harness, clear all fault codes in both the ECU and the transmission controller (EPC/TCU), and start the engine.

   Verify Operation

   Verify that the engine speed is accurately displayed on the dash, transmitted over the CAN BUS, and that the transmission engages in forward/reverse without defaulting to neutral.
