John Deere 190.31 – PTF: Engine Speed Sensor Malfunction

The control software has detected an open circuit to the engine speed sensor, or the module is failing to receive the engine speed data over the CAN BUS from the Engine Control Unit (ECU) while the machine is in motion.

   Check ECU Codes First: When active, this fault usually generates a primary diagnostic trouble code in the Engine Control Unit (ECU) software. The ECU code takes priority over the PTF code; diagnose the ECU engine speed fault first.

   Inspect Wiring and Connections: Ensure all connections to the engine speed sensor are secure and free from corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

   Check for Open Circuits: Inspect the wiring harness between the engine speed sensor, the ECU, and the PTF module for chafing, breaks, or open circuits.

   Test the Sensor: Use a multimeter or John Deere diagnostic tool to test the engine speed sensor and its associated circuit for continuity and proper resistance.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the engine speed sensor on the engine block (typically near the flywheel housing or camshaft, depending on the specific PowerTech engine model).

   Disconnect and Clean

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor. Clean any dirt or corrosion from the connectors using electrical contact cleaner.

   Harness Repair (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire in the CAN BUS lines or sensor pigtail, splice and repair the wiring using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors.

   Sensor Replacement

   If the wiring is intact but the sensor failed continuity testing, remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place and pull the old sensor out.

   Install New Sensor

   Insert the new engine speed sensor, secure it with the retaining bolt, and reconnect the wiring harness.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 000190.31 fault code from the PTF and ECU modules.

   Test Operation

   Start the engine and verify that the engine speed registers correctly on the dash and that the fault code does not return.
