John Deere 191 – PTR, EPC, PTI, PTQ, or PTA: Main Control Module Has Noted The Transmission Speed Sensor Speed Is Too High During Calibration
Issue description

Check the cause
Verify the calibration environment: Ensure the tractor is parked on a completely level surface, the parking brake is engaged, and the machine cannot roll during the calibration process (most common cause).
Inspect the transmission speed sensor (B104/B172) on the transmission housing for physical damage, heavy debris, or misalignment.
Check the wiring harness and connections leading to the transmission speed sensor for corrosion, loose connector pins, or chafed wires.
Test the sensor circuitry using a multimeter to check for proper functionality, open circuits, or short circuits.
Check for related diagnostic codes, such as 000191.17 (Transmission Speed Too Low), which often indicates a completely failed sensor or severed wire.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a flat, level surface. Engage the park brake and turn off the engine.
Access the Sensor
Locate the transmission speed sensor (B104) on the transmission housing.
Disconnect and Remove
Unplug the 3-wire harness connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the housing and pull the sensor out.
Install the New Sensor
Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt to factory spec.
Reconnect
Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor, ensuring the connector clicks and locks into place.
Clear Codes and Recalibrate
Turn the key on, use the CommandCenter or a diagnostic tool to clear the stored PTR 000191.00 code. Restart the engine and initiate the transmission calibration procedure again, ensuring the tractor remains completely stationary.
