Check the cause

  1. Power Cycle & Battery Check: Restart the engine to verify if the active code reappears. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes to perform a hard reset on the modules, then clear the codes. Low voltage during cranking can cause modules to boot asynchronously, triggering a false missing message code.

  2. Check Fuses: Check fuse F24 (or fuse F9 on some 7000-series transmission modules). A blown fuse will cut power to the ECU or the CAN circuit, immediately halting data transmission.

  3. Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring associated with the CAN BUS network between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the EIC/ICU. Look for chafed wires, loose connector pins, or corrosion.

Repair steps

  1. Verify Power to the ECU

    Test the power and ground pins at the Engine Control Unit harness. If the ECU is not powering up, it cannot broadcast CAN messages. Repair any broken power supply wires or replace blown fuses (F24/F9).

  2. Test the CAN BUS Integrity

    Using a multimeter, check the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector (with the battery disconnected). It should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one of the terminating resistors is faulty or there is an open circuit in the CAN harness.

  3. Secure Connectors

    Disconnect the main harnesses at the ECU and the EIC/ICU. Spray with contact cleaner, ensure no pins are pushed back, and securely reconnect them.

  4. Software Update

    Confirm that the ECU and EIC software are up-to-date. Dealer-level software glitches that affect data interpretation and transmission can often be corrected through a reflash.

  5. Module Replacement

    If the wiring harness is fully intact, terminating resistors are good, and the ECU is powered but still not communicating, the Service ADVISOR manual dictates replacing the faulty controller (either the ECU failing to send, or the EIC failing to receive).
