John Deere 2000.09 – TID: CAN BUS Message Fault / ECU Communication Data Error
Issue description
The TID (Direct Drive Gear Shift Module) has lost communication with the Engine Control Unit (ECU) over the CAN Bus network because expected communication messages were not received, are intermittent, or are missing entirely, forcing the machine into a protective state.

Check the cause
Restart the tractor to see if the code clears from Active to Stored, ruling out a temporary voltage drop or boot-up glitch
Inspect the fuse panel for blown fuses related to the ECU and TID module, and swap the ECU power relay with a non-essential relay
Inspect all CAN bus connectors between the TID and ECU for loose wiring, backed-out pins, or corrosion
Verify battery voltage is sufficient and check main chassis grounds, as low voltage during cranking can cause modules to fail to boot
Check for accompanying codes (like ECU 629.13 or ACU 2000.09) which indicate the issue is the ECU itself, the main ECU power supply, or a severed main CAN backbone
Repair steps
Disconnect Battery
Disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing the electrical system to prevent short circuits.
Clean and Secure Connectors
Locate the CAN bus connectors (often found in the engine bay, behind the seat in the fuse board, and near the transmission control block). Disconnect them, spray with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect them.
Replace Faulty CAN Connectors
If the plastic connectors are brittle, heat-damaged, or heavily corroded, cut and splice in new CAN bus connectors.
Test Continuity
Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the ECU and the TID module.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, enter the diagnostic menu on the Command Center, and clear the stored codes.
Module Replacement
If wiring is perfectly intact, relays are good, and the code persists, either the ECU or the TID module has suffered an internal hardware failure. Replacement modules will require a John Deere dealer to flash the software and calibrate the transmission.
