John Deere 2002.09 – ECU / ICU: No CAN Message Received From Source Address 2

Issue description

The controller logging the code has lost CAN bus communication with the module assigned to Source Address 2. The FMI 09 identifier specifically denotes an abnormal update rate, a timeout, or a missing message.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle power by restarting the engine to see if the code was caused by a transient communication glitch.

  2. Visually inspect the CAN Bus wiring and connectors between the ECU/ICU and the Source Address 2 module for frayed wires, chafing, or loose connections.

  3. Disconnect the harness at the ECU and the Source Address 2 module to check for moisture, bent pins, or corrosion.

  4. With the battery disconnected, test CAN Bus resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a faulty terminating resistor or open circuit, 0 ohms indicates a short).

  5. Verify the module at Source Address 2 is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground.

  6. Use John Deere Service ADVISOR to ping the modules on the network and verify exactly which module has dropped off the bus.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable before performing any electrical repairs.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the visual inspection revealed damaged wiring (e.g., rodent damage or chafing against the chassis), splice and seal the wires using John Deere approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Replace Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN bus resistance check failed (reading 120 ohms instead of 60 ohms), locate and replace the faulty CAN bus terminating resistor.

  4. Address the Source Address 2 Module

    If the wiring and resistors are perfectly intact and the module has power/ground but still won't communicate, the module itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the stored 002002.09 fault code.

  6. Test Operation

    Start the engine and monitor the system to ensure normal operation and verify the code does not return.
