John Deere 2003.09 – ICC (Instrument Cluster Control): Source Address 3 Abnormal Update Rate / PTR Message Missing
Issue description
CAN BUS communication from the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Power Train Reverser (PTR) has been lost, timed out, or is not being received by the dash module (ICC) over the J1939 CAN network.

Check the cause
Restart the machine to see if a power cycle resets the communication messages
Inspect fuses powering the PTR/TCU and the ICC (e.g., F9, F24, or transmission-specific fuses)
Check for accompanying codes logged by the PTR itself to rule out total module failure
Inspect CAN bus integrity by measuring termination resistance across CAN High and CAN Low (should be approximately 60 ohms with battery disconnected)
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate Modules
Locate the PTR (Transmission Control Unit) and the ICC (Dash Module).
Inspect Wiring and Connectors
Disconnect the harness connectors at both modules. Inspect the pins for pushed-out terminals, corrosion, or moisture. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.
Verify Power and Ground
Test the power and ground circuits going to the PTR module. If the PTR is not receiving power, trace the circuit back to the fuse panel and repair the open wire or replace the blown fuse.
Test CAN Continuity
Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the PTR and the ICC. Repair any open, chafed, or shorted wiring in the harness.
Software Update
If the wiring, power, and grounds are intact, reconnect all modules and restore battery power. Have a dealer verify if the ICC and PTR modules require a software update to resolve communication bugs.
Replace Module
If the PTR has verified power, ground, and CAN continuity but remains unresponsive to the network, the PTR module has failed internally and must be replaced.
Parts you might need
(4)Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / PTR Module
AT418570Example OEM Part Number (Transmission ECU). Control modules are highly specific to the machine's serial number and transmission type. Dealer programming/calibration required.
Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / PTR Module
RE207311Example OEM Part Number (Electronic Control Unit for 5M series). Control modules are highly specific to the machine's serial number and transmission type. Dealer programming/calibration required.
Instrument Cluster Control (ICC)
LVA23368Example OEM Part Number (Instrument Cluster, ICC, Non-CAN).
CAN Terminating Resistor
Generic John Deere CAN bus terminator (part number varies by chassis).
