John Deere 2003.09 – ICC: CAN Bus Communication Error

Issue description

The module logging the code is experiencing an abnormal update rate or is missing expected CAN BUS messages from the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or the Electronic Power Control (EPC).

Check the cause

  1. Check fuses (commonly F24, F6, F13, or F35) that supply power to the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) and the CAN bus circuit

  2. Inspect all wiring harnesses and connectors between the TCU and the ICC for looseness, corrosion, or physical damage

  3. Test CAN BUS network integrity for faults, shorts to ground, or disruptions in signal integrity using a multimeter or diagnostic tool

  4. Verify that the Transmission Control Unit is powering up and functioning correctly

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Fuse Replacement

    If any transmission or CAN-related fuses were found blown during diagnostics, replace them with the exact OEM amperage rating.

  3. Harness Repair

    Locate the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the TCU to the ICC. Disconnect the connectors at both modules.

  4. Clean Contacts

    Inspect the connector pins. If pushed back, re-seat them. Clean any corrosion with electrical contact cleaner and apply a light coat of dielectric grease.

  5. Repair Wiring

    If the CAN High or CAN Low wires are chafed or broken, repair the wiring using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques to maintain network resistance.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the modules and the battery. Turn the key switch to the ON position. Access the diagnostic menu on the dash (or use a John Deere Service ADVISOR tool) to clear the stored 002003.09 fault code.

  7. Test Operation

    Start the engine. If the code returns immediately and the wiring is confirmed 100% intact, the TCU or ICC may have an internal hardware failure and will require dealer software updates or replacement.
