John Deere 2003.09 – TID (Direct Drive Gear Shift Module): CAN Bus Communication Error / Missing Message from the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Electronic Power Control (EPC)
Issue description
Abnormal Update Rate, meaning the expected CAN bus messages from the module are being received intermittently, have timed out, or are completely missing. This indicates a data transfer problem on the CAN network, preventing the machine's computers from communicating with the transmission.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- 6110R
- 6120R
- 6130R
- 6145R
- 6155R
- 6175R
- 6195R
- 6215R
Check the cause
Check fuses F6, F13, F24, and F35 for the ICU, IVT, or PowrQuad/Direct Drive electronics
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness leading to the Direct Drive Gear Shift Module for loose pins, corrosion, or chafed wires
Test CAN BUS network integrity using a multimeter (should read ~60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low with the battery disconnected)
Verify the TID module is receiving proper unswitched and switched supply voltage and ground
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Fuse Replacement
If any transmission or module-related fuses (e.g., F24) are blown, replace them. Reconnect the battery and turn the key on to see if the code clears.
Harness Repair
If wiring damage is found at the TID module connector, repair or replace the damaged wiring harness section and secure the connections.
Software Update
If the wiring is intact, connect John Deere Service ADVISOR. Ensure that the EPC, TCU, and TID systems are flashed with the latest software versions, as configuration bugs can cause communication timeouts.
Module Replacement
If the module has proper power, ground, and CAN continuity but still fails to broadcast messages, the TID (Direct Drive Gear Shift Module) has internally failed and must be replaced.
Calibration
After replacing the module, a dealer-level calibration of the transmission control system is usually required to restore full functionality.
Parts you might need
