John Deere 2003.09 – TIQ: CAN Bus Communication Error

Issue description

A control module on the machine's CAN network is experiencing intermittent or completely non-existent reception of data messages from the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Electrically Powered Control (EPC) within the expected timeout period.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a power cycle by restarting the vehicle or cycling the key switch to rule out a temporary voltage drop or software glitch

  2. Inspect fuses associated with the transmission control and CAN communication (specifically Fuse F6, F13, F24, or F35 depending on transmission type)

  3. Check the CAN Bus wiring harness between the TIQ, PTQ, and other modules for loose pins, corrosion, or physical damage

  4. Perform a network integrity test using a diagnostic tool to verify if the transmission controller is broadcasting messages

  5. Ensure there is no external electromagnetic interference disrupting the CAN Bus signals and verify that the CAN cables are properly grounded and shielded

Repair steps

  1. Safely secure the machine

    Park the tractor, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Check and replace fuses

    Locate the fuse panel and test the transmission/communication fuses (F6, F13, F24, F35). Replace any blown fuses with the exact same amperage rating.

  3. Test the system

    Restart the tractor. If the code returns, proceed to the wiring harness.

  4. Inspect connectors

    Locate the TIQ module and the main Transmission Control Unit (PTQ/TCU). Disconnect their wiring harnesses. Inspect the terminals for pushed-back pins, moisture, or corrosion. Clean with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect.

  5. Test CAN continuity

    Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the modules. Repair or replace any damaged sections of the wiring harness.

  6. Software Update

    If the wiring is intact, the issue may be a software conflict. Ensure that the TIQ and transmission control software are updated to the latest versions (this requires dealer-level software).

  7. Module Replacement

    If all wiring, power, and grounds are verified but communication remains dead, the transmitting module (PTQ/TCU) or the receiving module (TIQ) has likely suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced and calibrated by a dealer.
