John Deere 2003.09 – XSC: CAN Bus Communication Error
Issue description
A control module on the network (specifically the XSC AutoTrac steering module) is not receiving expected data messages from the Transmission Control Unit (TCU), Electronic Power Control (EPC), or transmission control software due to an abnormal update rate or missing message.

Check the cause
Restart the tractor to see if the communication messages reset upon startup
Check transmission fuses (e.g., Fuse F6 for IVT/AutoPowr or Fuse F35 for PowrQuad Plus) for blown fuses
Inspect the CAN Bus network wiring and connectors between the XSC module and the transmission controller for damage, loose connections, or corrosion
Test the CAN Bus terminating resistors at the ends of the network to verify they are functioning correctly
Monitor CAN Bus traffic using a diagnostic tool to see if the network is overloaded or if the transmission controller is offline
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery if you will be performing electrical repairs.
Inspect and Replace Fuses
Locate the load center (fuse box) and inspect the fuses related to the transmission control unit. Replace any blown fuses and retest.
Clean and Secure Connectors
Locate the XSC module and the transmission controller. Disconnect their wiring harnesses, inspect the pins for pushed-out terminals or green corrosion, clean them with electrical contact cleaner, and securely reconnect them.
Test/Replace Terminating Resistors
Locate the CAN bus terminating resistors on the wiring harness. With the battery disconnected, test the network resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (it should typically read 60 ohms). If a resistor is faulty, replace it.
Repair Wiring
If you find chafed or broken wires in the CAN bus harness causing an open or short circuit, repair or replace the damaged harness section.
Software Update
If the wiring and resistors are intact, the XSC or transmission control software may have a bug or compatibility issue. A John Deere dealer will need to connect Service ADVISOR to update the modules to the latest software versions.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key switch ON, clear the diagnostic trouble codes, and operate the tractor to verify the repair.
