John Deere 2005.09 – FCC: Incorrect CAN BUS Message / Message Missing

Issue description

Data transfer issue or communication breakdown on the CAN bus network, resulting in the module failing to receive expected messages from other control units (such as the transmission control software like TIQ, TIA, TID, TIP, or the Armrest Control Unit/ACU). This can be caused by an open circuit, a short circuit, faulty CAN bus terminating resistors, or a malfunctioning sending/receiving module.

Check the cause

  1. Check for additional active fault codes in the FCC or other modules (like transmission controllers or ACU) which may point to a central wiring issue.

  2. Inspect fuses that power the FCC and communicating modules (e.g., F13, F24, F35).

  3. Inspect CAN bus wiring network for open circuits, short circuits, or accumulated debris and corrosion at connectors.

  4. Evaluate the condition and functionality of the CAN bus terminating resistors.

  5. Restart the engine or cycle the key switch to see if the code is an intermittent glitch.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery before servicing electrical components.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic inspection revealed damaged wires, open circuits, or corroded connectors between the FCC and the transmission/armrest modules, repair or replace the affected harness sections.

  3. Replace Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN bus terminating resistors test out of specification, replace them.

  4. Replace the Module

    If the wiring and resistors are intact and the sending modules are verified to be broadcasting correctly, the Front Console Control Unit (FCC) itself may have an internal failure and will need to be replaced.

  5. Reset and Verify

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key switch on, and clear the error codes. Test the system by operating the tractor to ensure that CAN communication has been fully restored and the code does not return.
