John Deere 2005.09 – Multiple (CSC, ECU, ICU, PTI, SCU, HCU, SCC): CAN Bus Communication Error / Abnormal Update Rate

Issue description

A required CAN message is missing or not being received within the expected timeout period. This generally indicates that messages from the Armrest Control Unit (ACU), User Interface Controller (UIC), or Transmission Control Unit (TII/TIP) are missing from the network.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the machine to see if resetting the communication messages clears the code

  2. Inspect fuses related to the transmission and armrest controls (specifically F13 for AutoPowr/IVT, F35 for PowrQuad, and F24)

  3. Inspect the CAN Bus wiring for open circuits, short circuits, or signs of corrosion at the connectors

  4. Test the CAN Bus terminating resistors with the key off and batteries disconnected (resistance across CAN High and CAN Low should be exactly 60 ohms)

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery negative cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Fuse Replacement

    If any of the aforementioned fuses (F13, F35, F24) are blown, replace them and retest the system.

  3. Harness Inspection & Repair

    Trace the main CAN bus harness between the Rear Chassis Control Unit (CSC) and the Transmission Control Unit (or Armrest Control Unit). Look for chafed wires or loose connector pins. Clean any corroded pins with contact cleaner and ensure they are seated tightly.

  4. Resistor Replacement

    If the CAN bus resistance test fails, locate and replace the faulty CAN bus terminating resistor on the main harness.

  5. Module Verification

    If the wiring, fuses, and resistors are all intact, the fault lies internally within either the transmitting module (e.g., Transmission TCU/ACU) or the receiving module (CSC/Rear Chassis). At this stage, a John Deere dealer must use Service ADVISOR to re-flash the software or replace the failed control unit.
