John Deere 2005.09 – PTQ: CAN Bus Communication Error

Issue description

The CAN bus messages expected from the Armrest Control Unit (ACU) are intermittent, missing, or not being received by the rest of the network. The PTQ (Main Control Module) has lost communication with the ACU or TIQ control software.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the tractor to see if the communication glitch corrects itself and resets the communication messages

  2. Check fuses that power the CAN bus modules (e.g., F9, F13, or F35 for PowrQuad Plus/IVT depending on the model)

  3. Inspect the CAN BUS wiring harness and connectors between the PTQ and the ACU for loose wires, incompatible connections, or corrosion

  4. Check system voltage by visually inspecting around the batteries and alternator for damage or debris, as low voltage can cause modules to drop off the CAN network

  5. Test communication integrity using John Deere Service ADVISOR or a compatible diagnostic tool to monitor data transfer and verify if the ACU is unresponsive or if there is a wiring break

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Safely park the equipment, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during inspection.

  2. Access the Modules

    Locate the PTQ (Main Control Module) and the ACU (Armrest Control Unit) on your specific tractor.

  3. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Disconnect the wiring harnesses at both the PTQ and ACU. Inspect the pins for damage, push-back, or corrosion. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and firmly reseat the connectors.

  4. Test the CAN Lines

    Using a multimeter, test the CAN High and CAN Low wires for continuity between the ACU and the PTQ. Repair or replace any damaged wiring or connectors found during the test.

  5. Replace Faulty Components

    If the wiring is fully intact, the fuses are good, and the ACU is confirmed to be unresponsive to diagnostic pings, the Armrest Control Unit itself has likely failed and must be replaced.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and use the CommandCenter or Service ADVISOR to clear the stored codes. Verify that PTQ 002005.09 does not return.
