John Deere 2005.09 – XSC: CAN Bus communication error

Issue description

SPN 2005 designates that messages from the Armrest Control Unit (ACU) or User Interface Controller (UIC) are missing. FMI 09 indicates an abnormal update rate, meaning the expected data is intermittent or completely missing from the network. The reporting module is not receiving the required interface commands or transmission data over the CAN bus.

Check the cause

  1. Power cycle the tractor to see if it is a transient startup error

  2. Check if other modules (ECU, ICU, SCC) are also logging 2005.09 to determine if the Armrest Control Unit (ACU) is offline

  3. Inspect battery voltage and alternator output, as low voltage can cause modules to drop off the CAN bus

  4. Inspect fuses powering the ACU and the XSC (e.g., Fuse F13)

  5. Check CAN Bus wiring and connectors between the XSC and the ACU for signs of damage, loose connections, moisture, or corrosion

  6. Monitor CAN Bus traffic using John Deere Service ADVISOR to identify anomalies or network overload

Repair steps

  1. Cycle the Key

    Turn off the engine, wait for the modules to power down completely, and restart the vehicle to see if the code clears.

  2. Verify Fuses and Relays

    Locate the cab fuse panel and test all fuses related to the Armrest Control Unit, User Interface Controller, and Steering Control Unit. Replace any blown fuses.

  3. Harness Inspection & Cleaning

    Disconnect the wiring harnesses at the XSC module and the ACU. Inspect the pins for push-back, corrosion, or water ingress (especially if the tractor was recently washed). Clean with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect.

  4. Test CAN Bus Integrity

    With the batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. It should read approximately 60 ohms, verifying that the terminating resistors are intact.

  5. Software Update

    Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR. Check for and install any available software updates for the XSC and ACU/UIC, as software bugs can cause communication timeouts.

  6. Module Replacement

    If the wiring is perfectly intact, the terminating resistors are good, and the software is up to date, the fault lies within a module. If the ACU is not communicating with any module, replace the ACU. If only the XSC is failing to receive messages, the XSC module itself may require replacement.
