John Deere 2006.09 – CSC / ECU: Incorrect CAN Bus Message, Information from EIC Control Software

Issue description

A data transfer problem on the CAN Bus network indicating the control module logging the code is not receiving the expected communication messages from the EIC (Engine Interface Control) software. This is typically caused by an open circuit, a short circuit, or a faulty CAN Bus connection.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the CAN Bus wiring harness between the CSC (Rear Chassis Control Unit) and the EIC (Display/Interface) for signs of chafing, pinched wires, or short circuits.

  2. Check connectors on both the engine controller/CSC and the display, paying special attention to the interconnect between the two wiring harnesses on the metal chassis partition.

  3. Measure voltage levels at the input of the rear chassis control unit (should be under 16V) to rule out overvoltage or a short to a power source.

  4. Wiggle the harness while monitoring the CAN lines to check for intermittent connections causing dropped messages.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical damage during testing.

  2. Locate Modules

    Locate the CSC (Rear Chassis Control Unit) and the EIC (Engine Interface Control) display module.

  3. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at both the CSC and EIC. Inspect for bent pins, corrosion, or moisture. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and reseat them firmly.

  4. Perform Continuity Testing

    Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the CSC and the EIC. Also, test these wires for continuity to ground to rule out a short circuit.

  5. Repair Wiring

    If an open or short circuit is found, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness, ensuring proper insulation and shielding are maintained.

  6. Test the System

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and clear the stored fault codes.

  7. Module Replacement

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly and the code immediately returns, the CSC module or the EIC software/hardware itself may have failed internally. The module will need to be replaced and reprogrammed by a John Deere dealer.
