John Deere 2006.09 – SCO, ECU, CSC, TIQ: EIC Message Missing
Issue description
A control module on the machine's CAN Bus network is not receiving expected communication messages from Source Address 6, which is assigned to the EIC (Engine Interface Control) software/module. The FMI 09 denotes an abnormal update rate or a missing message, typically pointing to an open circuit, a short circuit, faulty CAN terminating resistors, or a loss of power/failure at the EIC module itself.

Check the cause
Check EIC Power and Fuses: Check the fuses in the dash and command center that supply power to the EIC. A blown fuse will take the EIC offline.
Inspect CAN Bus Wiring: Check the CAN Bus harness between the SCO (Front Chassis Module) and the EIC for open circuits, chafed wires causing a short to ground, or loose/corroded connector pins.
Test Terminating Resistors: Evaluate the CAN Bus terminating resistors with a multimeter (with the battery disconnected, the network should read approximately 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low).
Check for Interference: Ensure proper grounding and shielding of the CAN Bus cables, as electrical interference can disrupt the signal.
Verify Other Codes: Check if other modules (like the ECU or CSC) are also logging 002006.09. If multiple modules are logging it, the EIC is almost certainly offline or the main CAN backbone is severed.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the machine's batteries before performing any electrical repairs or unplugging modules.
Repair Wiring/Connectors
If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wires or corroded pins at the SCO or EIC connectors, repair them using a John Deere approved wiring pigtail or pin replacement kit.
Replace Terminating Resistors
If the CAN bus resistance is out of specification (e.g., 120 ohms indicates one resistor is dead), locate and replace the faulty terminating resistor.
Address the EIC Module
If the wiring, grounds, and fuses are perfectly intact but the EIC is still not communicating on the network, the EIC module itself has likely failed and must be replaced.
Software Update
Install any available software updates or patches for the EIC and SCO control software, as software divergence can sometimes cause communication drops.
Re-test
Reconnect the batteries, clear the stored diagnostic trouble codes, and cycle the key to verify that communication has been fully restored and the code does not return.
