Issue description

A specific control module on the tractor's CAN network has stopped receiving expected data packets from another module. This can be logged by multiple receiving modules when a specific transmitting module goes offline.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle power by turning the key switch off and restarting the tractor to see if the communication code resets

  2. Attempt vehicle recovery by returning the shift lever to the 'Park' position if the system has inhibited vehicle motion

  3. Check fuses (specifically F23, F24, or F9 depending on model) to ensure power is reaching the transmitting module

  4. Check for accompanying low voltage codes (e.g., 000158.04) or CAN bus voltage codes (e.g., 520542.03 / 520543.04) that indicate a physical short or failing alternator/battery

Repair steps

  1. Verify Module Power

    Locate the cab fuse panel. Inspect and test the fuses responsible for the Steering Control Unit (SSU) and the PTQ module (primarily F23). Replace if blown.

  2. Inspect the CAN Bus Harness

    If fuses are intact, visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the PTQ, ICU, and SSU. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or loose ground connections.

  3. Check Connectors for Corrosion

    Disconnect the harnesses at the PTQ and SSU modules. Inspect the pins for moisture, green corrosion, or pushed-back pins. Clean with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  4. Test CAN Network Resistance

    With the tractor powered off and batteries disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the resistance between the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, a terminating resistor or a segment of the bus is broken.

  5. Dealer Software Intervention

    If the wiring and power supplies are verified as good, the fault lies internally within the transmitting module (SSU) or the receiving module (PTQ). A John Deere dealer must use Service ADVISOR software to re-flash the control unit software or calibrate a replacement module.
