John Deere 2019.09 – TID (Direct Drive Gear Shift Module): Incorrect CAN Bus Message / Control unit messages missing

Issue description

The Direct Drive Gear Shift Module is not receiving the required data transfer messages from other control units on the network (such as the XSC control software or the Steering Control Unit / SSU). The reception of one, several, or all of the CAN messages transmitted to the module is intermittent or completely non-existent, pointing to a communication breakdown on the CAN BUS.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the Power: Return the shift lever to Park, cycle the key switch off and back on, and restart the engine to see if the code clears and vehicle recovery is possible.

  2. Check Fuses: Inspect the fuses that supply power to the transmission control units and communication modules (commonly F23, F24, or F42 depending on your exact tractor configuration).

  3. Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other active codes in the CommandCenter (such as XSC, SSU, or ICU codes). If multiple modules are reporting missing messages, the issue is likely a central CAN bus wiring fault rather than a failed Gear Shift Module.

  4. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness leading to the TID module for chafing, rodent damage, or pinched wires.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during testing.

  2. Access the Module

    Locate the Direct Drive Gear Shift Module (TID) and carefully disconnect its main wiring harness connector.

  3. Clean and Inspect Pins

    Inspect the connector pins on both the module and the harness side for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture intrusion. Clean the contacts with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner and allow them to dry.

  4. Test the CAN Circuit

    Using a multimeter, verify the integrity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires (typically the yellow and green twisted pair) between the TID module and the main diagnostic port/bus hub. Repair or replace any damaged wiring segments.

  5. Software Update / Module Replacement

    If the wiring, power, and ground circuits all test good, the communication failure may be internal to the transmitting control software or the TID module itself. The module may require a software re-flash via John Deere Service ADVISOR. If the module has suffered an internal hardware failure, it must be replaced.

  6. Reassembly and Clearing

    Reconnect the harness, reconnect the battery, and turn the key on. Clear the stored fault codes using the CommandCenter display or a diagnostic tool.

  7. Test Drive

    Operate the tractor through its gears to ensure the Direct Drive transmission shifts correctly and the 002019.09 code does not return.
