John Deere 2019.09 – XMC: Incorrect CAN BUS Message, Information from XSC Control Software

Issue description

A data transfer problem occurs between the XSC (Secondary Steering Control Software / C-Box) and the XMC (Main Steering Control Software / A-Box). The reception of one, several, or all of the CAN messages transmitted by the XSC to the XMC is intermittent or non-existent, indicating a physical problem in the CAN BUS wiring, electrical interference, or an internal fault within the transmitting/receiving control modules.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect CAN Bus Wiring: Check for loose, damaged, or corroded wires and connectors between the XMC and XSC control modules.

  2. Check Fuses: Verify the power supply fuses for the steering control modules (e.g., F23 or F24, depending on the specific tractor model's fuse block).

  3. Verify Communication: Use a diagnostic tool (John Deere Service ADVISOR) to monitor CAN Bus messages and verify if the XMC and XSC are communicating at all.

  4. Check for Interference: Identify and eliminate sources of electrical interference. Ensure proper grounding and shielding of the CAN Bus cables.

  5. Check Software Versions: Verify if there are pending software updates or patches for the XMC and XSC modules.

Repair steps

  1. Safe Shutdown

    Park the tractor safely, lower any implements, and turn the key switch to the OFF position to cycle the power.

  2. Locate Modules

    Locate the XMC and XSC control modules (often located in the rear of the tractor or under the cab, depending on the series).

  3. Harness Inspection

    Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the XMC and XSC. Look for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper.

  4. Connector Maintenance

    Disconnect the harness connectors at both the XMC and XSC modules. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor tension. Clean the contacts with an approved electronic contact cleaner and reconnect them securely.

  5. Test the Circuit

    Perform a continuity and resistance check on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the two modules. (A healthy CAN Bus typically reads ~60 ohms with the battery disconnected).

  6. Software Flash

    If the wiring is intact, connect John Deere Service ADVISOR and install any available software updates for both the XMC and XSC control modules.

  7. Module Replacement

    If the wiring is perfect and software updates do not clear the code, the internal EEPROM or CAN transceiver in one of the modules (XSC or XMC) has likely failed. Replace the faulty Steering System Control Unit and perform the required steering angle calibrations.
