John Deere 002033.09 – Cab Module (TIA): TIA CAN Bus Communication Error

Issue description

A communication error has occurred on the CAN bus involving the Cab Module (TIA). The FMI 09 indicates an abnormal update rate, meaning a controller on the network is not receiving expected messages from the Tractor-Implement Automation (TIA) module in a timely manner. This disruption in data exchange limits or disables automated features and is typically caused by physical or electrical issues within the CAN bus network rather than a single component failure.

Applies to these machines

  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness and connectors for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections, paying close attention to the Cab Module and connected implements

  2. Check the diagnostic display for active and stored codes to determine if the fault is current or intermittent

  3. Perform a CAN bus resistance check with the battery disconnected: measure between CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic connector (approximately 60 ohms is normal; 120 ohms indicates a faulty or disconnected terminating resistor)

  4. Perform a voltage check with the system powered on: CAN High should be 2.5-3.5 volts, and CAN Low should be 1.5-2.5 volts

  5. Isolate controllers by disconnecting them from the CAN bus one at a time to see if the fault code clears, identifying the specific source of network disruption

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring and connectors

If physical damage, chafing, or corrosion was found during the visual inspection, repair or replace the affected wiring and connectors. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.

  2. Replace terminating resistor

If the CAN bus resistance check measured 120 ohms, locate and replace the faulty or disconnected terminating resistor.

  3. Secure controller connections

Ensure that all controllers, especially the Cab Module (TIA) and any implement controllers, are securely connected to the CAN bus.

  4. Update software and configuration

Ensure all controllers have the latest software updates. If an implement is involved, verify that it is properly configured and activated in the tractor's display.

  5. Replace faulty controller

If a specific controller (such as the Cab Module) is isolated as the source of the fault during diagnostic checks, replace the module.
