Check the cause

  1. Restart the vehicle to see if the issue is a transient communication glitch

  2. Check the fuse panel for blown fuses related to the Hitch Control Unit and the reporting module (e.g., Fuse F30)

  3. Check for accompanying voltage codes (such as HV1 000158.04) that would confirm the hitch module is not receiving enough power

  4. Visually inspect the CAN BUS wiring harness and connectors at the Hitch Control Unit for corrosion, backed-out pins, or physical damage

Repair steps

  1. Acknowledge and Clear

Press the select switch on the CommandCenter to acknowledge the code. Shut down the tractor and restart it to see if the active code returns.

  2. Fuse Replacement

If the code returns, locate the fuse panel and test the fuses associated with the HCU/HCC and the reporting module (such as F30). Replace any blown fuses and re-test.

  3. Harness Repair

If fuses are good, use a multimeter to verify power, ground, and CAN High/CAN Low continuity at the Hitch Control Unit connector. Repair any broken wires or clean corroded terminals.

  4. Module Replacement

If the HCU has verified power, ground, and intact CAN lines but is still not communicating with the SFA/ICU, the Hitch Control Unit itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced.

  5. Dealer Calibration

If the HCU is replaced, OEM documentation notes that you may need to have a John Deere dealer calibrate the new module and clear historical codes.
