Check the cause

  1. Restart the engine to verify if the active code reappears, as it may be a temporary communication glitch

  2. Inspect the fuse panel, specifically Fuse F15, which is the primary circuit for PTF communication

  3. Inspect CAN Bus wiring and connectors between the TID and PTF for loose, damaged, or corroded connections

  4. Check for sources of electrical interference and ensure proper grounding and shielding of CAN Bus cables

  5. Verify the condition and installation of the CAN Bus terminating resistors

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and remove the key.

  2. Fuse Replacement

    Locate the fuse panel and inspect Fuse F15. If blown, replace it with a fuse of the exact same amperage rating. Restart the tractor to see if the code clears.

  3. Harness Inspection

    If the fuse is intact, locate the Front PTO Control Unit (PTF) and the Direct Drive Gear Shift Module (TID). Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at both modules.

  4. Clean and Reconnect

    Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture. Clean with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect.

  5. Continuity and Short Testing

    Using a multimeter, test the CAN High and CAN Low wires for continuity between the TID and PTF modules. Test for short circuits to ground or to each other. Repair any damaged sections of the harness.

  6. Test Terminating Resistors

    With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins on the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms (two 120-ohm resistors in parallel). If it reads 120 ohms, one resistor is faulty or there is an open circuit. If it reads 0 ohms, there is a short. Replace faulty resistors (e.g., SE22 or X805 depending on the schematic).

  7. Software Update

    If wiring is verified good, the issue may be a software mismatch. A John Deere dealer may need to install available updates or patches for the TID and PTF control software.

  8. Module Replacement

    If all wiring, resistors, and software are verified, the Front PTO Control Unit (PTF) itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced by a dealer.
