John Deere 2042.09 – Steering System Control Unit: CAN Bus Message Cannot Be Received, Information from VTI Control Software

Issue description

There is a data transfer failure on the CAN Bus network between the steering control software and the Virtual Terminal Implement (VTI) control software (GreenStar display). This causes the AutoTrac/autosteer system to disengage and the control software to exhibit limited or no functionality.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the physical CAN Bus wiring harness connecting the XSC (Steering Module) to the VTI (GreenStar Display)

  2. Check connectors for loose, corroded, or damaged pins at both the display connection and the steering controller connection

  3. Verify software versions to ensure there is no software mismatch or glitch between the transmitting control software and the receiving module

  4. Cycle power by restarting the engine and cycling the key switch to see if the system recovers from a transient communication error

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during inspection.

  2. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks reveal chafed wires or broken pins in the CAN Bus harness between the cab display and the steering controller, repair the wiring or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Software Flash

If the wiring is intact, use John Deere Service ADVISOR to re-flash/update the XSC control unit and the GreenStar display to the latest software versions.

  4. Module Replacement

If the wiring is perfect and software updates fail to resolve the communication dropouts, the GreenStar Display module or the XSC Steering Controller may have an internal hardware failure and will need to be replaced.

  5. Clear Codes and Calibrate

After repairs, clear the diagnostic trouble codes using the monitor or Service ADVISOR. Perform a test drive to ensure AutoTrac engages without dropping the CAN signal.
