Issue description

Check the cause

  1. Check fuses F22, F30, and F35 (or equivalent Cab/OIC power supply fuses) for a blown fuse powering the CAB/CLC/OIC module

  2. Cycle the key switch to perform a system reset and check if the code was triggered by a temporary voltage drop or software glitch

  3. Visually inspect the batteries and alternator, as low system voltage can cause modules to drop off the CAN bus

  4. Test the CAN bus network for open circuits, short circuits, or loose connections by measuring resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms)

  5. Check for multiple modules throwing .09 communication codes simultaneously, which indicates a dead CAB/CLC module or a severed main CAN backbone

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing any CAN modules.

  2. Inspect Connectors

    Locate the CLC (Cab Load Center) / OIC module and the BLC (Basic Lighting Controller). Disconnect their wiring harnesses and inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture. Clean with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the CAN bus resistance test failed, trace the green and yellow CAN wires between the BLC and the CLC/CAB module. Repair any chafed wires or replace faulty CAN terminating resistors.

  4. Software Update

    If the wiring is intact and power/ground to the CLC is verified, the issue may be a software corruption. A John Deere dealer may need to re-flash or update the OIC/CLC control software.

  5. Module Replacement

    If the CLC/CAB module has internal hardware failure (often accompanied by internal fault codes like 520870.02), replace the module.

  6. Reassemble and Clear

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the CommandCenter or a diagnostic tool to clear the stored codes. Verify the repair by operating the machine to see if the code returns.
