Issue description

The module logging the code is not receiving the required operational data from the CCU over the CAN network. This is typically caused by an open circuit in the CAN Bus, a short circuit, or faulty CAN Bus terminating resistors.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Multiple Codes: Scan the entire machine. If the ETC is the only module logging 2071.09, the issue is isolated to the ETC's branch of the CAN bus. If multiple modules are logging it, the CCU itself is likely offline, unpowered, or the main CAN backbone is severed.

  2. Verify CCU Operation: Ensure the Chassis Control Unit is powering up. Check the main fuses and relays supplying power to the CCU.

  3. Inspect Communication Lines: Visually inspect the CAN wiring harness between the ETC (usually located in the cab roof) and the CCU for chafing, damage, or loose connections.

  4. Test Terminating Resistors: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. A reading of 120 ohms indicates a broken wire or a failed terminating resistor.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn the key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during testing.

  2. Access the Modules

    Locate the CCU and the ETC (Air Conditioning Module). On many tractors, the ETC requires removing the cab roof lining or console tray to access the module and its connectors (e.g., the 3-pin X18 connector).

  3. Inspect Connectors

    Disconnect the harness at both the ETC and the CCU. Check for backed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Perform Continuity Testing

    Using a multimeter, test the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the ETC connector to the CCU connector. Repair any open circuits or high-resistance wires.

  5. Check for Shorts

    Test for continuity between CAN High/CAN Low and the chassis ground, as well as to the power supply lines. Repair any shorts.

  6. Replace Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN bus resistance test failed in the diagnostic phase, locate and replace the faulty CAN terminating resistor.

  7. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect all modules, restore battery power, turn the key ON, and clear the fault codes.

  8. Software/Hardware Replacement

    If the wiring is perfectly intact and the code returns, the CCU or ETC may require a software reflash by a John Deere dealer, or one of the modules has internally failed and must be replaced.
